I painted a portrait and gained a friend. Here’s what happened, in words and pictures:

Yesterday saw the culmination of a dream project, almost a year in the making. It all started last summer when @henriettagronlund approached me after my live painting session in Tampere, timidly asking if I could paint her portrait. Henrietta’s mother is an artist, so she knows how apprehensive many artists are about commissions – me included. The decisive factor here was that Henrietta gave me free hands to paint her whichever way I wanted.

Henrietta visited my studio in the autumn, and I made a few collages of her. I saw her as a bird, a delicate creature, classy and intelligent yet incredibly humble. We spent the afternoon chatting about Annie Ernaux, Marguerite Duras, Paris and Kyllikki Villa, and ended up looking for treasures in the local secondhand market.

It soon became clear that I wanted to paint Henrietta as a wagtail; a harbinger of spring. I used an older painting of a Beltane Bloom as a base layer, hiding the spring flower underneath the festive bird to emphasise Henrietta’s springtime birthday.

Yesterday, the bird flew home to her new nest in Helsinki. Not just any nest: she now spends her days looking out of the same window that Helene Schjerfbeck and Maria Wiik did in the 1880s, when sharing a studio in exactly the same room. Such a privilege.

All ladies unite! (Oil on board, 2025)

I was going to name this one after Animal Farm, but there’s been plenty of porky squealing already! Recent events sadly highlight that ’all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others’.

This is a perfect time to bring female voices to the fore. Here is a poem by Edith Södergran, looking at the world through the eyes of a young girl in 1907-1909, and seeing hope despite the darkness:

Quiet, calm, peaceful,
Secret powers
hide in the gloom.
Dark, rich
sticky, thick
blood flows.

Shadows slip,
shadows disappear.
There is no longer anything.
Desolate and dark.
In the cold dark
there is nothing.

In the dark earth
drunk with blood,
thick blood.
Life arises,
new life
from destruction.

A new future is made
In the black earth.

All ladies unite! (Oil on board, 2025)

I was going to name this one after Animal Farm, but there’s been plenty of porky squealing already! Recent events sadly highlight that ’all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others’.

Visual art is more popular than ever, but its existence is threatened by cuts to the culture budget as proposed by the Ministry of Finance.

If the budget cuts go through, there will be a notable drop in the number of art exhibitions nationwide. The employment opportunities for visual artists and other art professionals will also diminish considerably.

At the same time, people are increasingly interested in visual arts. Last year, an all-time record was set, when Finnish visual art exhibitions and events attracted over 5 million visitors.

This is my favourite part of @kulttuuritalolaikku – the arches, columns and high ceiling remind me of inner courtyards or riads in Spain. The painting, Strange Beauty I, stands for a bust at the end of the beautiful colonnade. I thoroughly enjoyed installing my work in such an inspiring space, designed by architect brothers Jussi and Toivo Paatela, and completed in 1925.
